Commissions
-
1. Initial Inquiry and Discussion
The process begins with the client’s initial inquiry. This can be done through email, the contact form on my website or a phone call. The client should provide their contact information and express their interest in commissioning a portrait oil painting.
-
2. Initial Discussion
The client and I have an initial discussion to understand the client's vision for the portrait. This can be done in person, over the phone, or via video call.
Topics to discuss include the subject of the portrait, size preferences, style (realistic, impressionistic, etc.), and any specific details or preferences (background, clothing, props, etc.).
I asked that clients review my portrait gallery to ensure they are familiar with my work and artistic style.
-
3. Agreement and Contract
Once we have a clear understanding of the project, I will draft a commission agreement or contract.
The contract will outline important details such as the price, payment schedule, timeline, copyright ownership, and any other terms and conditions.
Both parties will review and sign the contract to ensure a mutual understanding and commitment.
-
4. Photo Session or Reference Material
For local clients, I schedule a photo session with the subject to capture the essence of the person, composition and mood.
For non-local clients, I ask that they send me a variety of photos of the subject to be painted.
-
5. Preliminary Sketch or Study
I often begin the process by creating a preliminary sketch or study of the portrait. This helps ensure that the composition and proportions are accurate and that the client is satisfied with the initial concept.
-
6. Artistic Process
With the client's approval of the preliminary sketch, I start the actual painting process.
This typically involves multiple layers of oil paint on canvas, with each layer allowing for drying time.
I will provide progress updates to the client at various stages.
-
7. Final Review and Approval
Once the painting is near completion, the client has the opportunity to review it and request any necessary adjustments or refinements.
It's essential to ensure my client is fully satisfied with the final result before proceeding.
-
8. Framing and Presentation
If desired, the artist can assist the client in selecting an appropriate frame for the finished painting.
The painting is then professionally framed and prepared for delivery or pickup.
-
9. Final Payment and Completion
The final payment is made by the client as per the terms outlined in the contract.
The commission is considered complete, and both parties maintain a record of the transaction.
The artist may request permission to showcase the artwork on their portfolio or website, with respect to the client's privacy preferences.
